Monkey Mind Podcast Episode #117: Training with Powell Cucchiella, LMHC

Confidence isn't just a feeling; it's a skill built in the dark. In the final installment of our 10-part mini-series, Powell Cucchiella, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, breaks down the mental architecture of training.

If you've ever felt prepared physically but lacked the "edge" in competition, this episode is for you.

The 5 Domains of Elite Training

Powell argues that to reach a high level in any sport, athletes must structure their training across five key domains:

  • Physical: Strength, speed, and endurance.

  • Technical: Refining the skill-based elements of your sport until they become automatic.

  • Tactical: Understanding strategy, positioning, and game film.

  • Lifestyle: The "non-negotiables", 8 hours of sleep, proper nutrition, self-care, and moderation of substances.

  • Mental: Training your brain to handle pressure and maintain focus.

The Mental Training Toolkit

Training the mind requires as much structure as a weightlifting session. Powell highlights four specific tools athletes should use to build mental resilience:

  1. Inner Voice: Auditing and improving your self-talk.

  2. Visualization: Mentally rehearsing performance and success.

  3. Breathwork: Using rhythmic breathing to self-regulate emotions and energy levels.

  4. Meditation: Training the ability to be present, which is the gateway to "flow state".

The Power of Structure

The most common mistake athletes make is a lack of intention in their practice. Powell recommends creating Process Goals, specific, time-bound objectives (e.g., "20 minutes of agility work, 5 days a week") to ensure your training translates to game-day results.
