The Central Message: The right sort of practice carried out over a sufficient period of time leads to improvement. Nothing else. There is no such thing as natural talent or prodigies. We are explaining what “the right sort of practice” is, as well as why talent alone doesn’t exist to lead to the best performers. But it comes back to this central message, that anyone can improve, and that it takes time. The only shortcut is practicing the right way.

Process:

  • Practice is the difference between good and great

  • Expert performance is hard work and requires repeated actions

  • Focus—break the work into manageable parts—’quality over quantity’

  • Goal setting and perseverance is key

  • Feedback matters—’practice makes permanent’

“This is a fundamental truth about any sort of practice: If you never push yourself beyond your comfort zone, you will never improve.”― Anders Ericsson

MENTAL PERFORMANCE TOOL

  • Put a bunch of baby steps together to hit a long-term goal

  • Have a specific plan to attack your practice

  • Identify your feedback mechanism (coach, video, teammate)

  • Get outside your comfort zone—the more uncomfortable the closer to that edge of practice you are working on

  • Monitor your progress---use technology, video, journaling, or self-assessments to monitor your progress in practice

TODAY- Consider the way you are practicing today—are you engaging in your practice with full attention? Are you getting feedback? Are you getting outside your comfort zone?
